Christian Friedrich Callisen (theologian)
Christian Friedrich Callisen (born February 20, 1777 in Glückstadt , † October 3, 1861 in Schleswig ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian and philosopher and from 1835 to 1848 General Superintendent of Schleswig.
Life
Callisen came from a family of pastors in Schleswig-Holstein. He was a son of the lawyer Christian Callisen and his wife Gertrud Sophie Henriette Winckler. His uncle was the general superintendent of Holstein Johann Leonhard Callisen , his brother the physician Adolph Carl Peter Callisen (1786–1866). Callisen began studying theology in Kiel in 1794 , which he continued in Leipzig in 1797 and Jena in 1798 , where he was a member of the Society of Free Men .
In 1799, after completing his studies, doing his doctorate at the philosophical faculty and taking the official theological examination, he became a private lecturer at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1803 he became the preacher of Hollingstedt and three quarters of a year later he was pastor of the Trinity Church in Schleswig-Friedrichsberg and provost of Hütten . During this time he founded the State Bible Society and wrote both writings for elementary schools and textbooks for young theologians. In 1821 he received the Knight's Cross of the Dannebrog Order .
In 1834 he succeeded Jacob Georg Christian Adler as general superintendent of the Duchy of Schleswig and at the same time (until 1845) preacher of Schloss Gottorf . As such, he assisted Christian VIII with the coronation in 1840 , for which he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Dannebrog Order. When, after Frederick VII took office in 1848, the conflicts between the German and Danish-speaking population intensified and the Schleswig-Holstein War broke out, Callisen, who himself did not speak Danish , resigned from his position.
The son of the same name was a civil servant, lawyer and mayor of Flensburg.
