Johann Leonhard Callisen
Johann Leonhard Callisen (born August 23, 1738 in Preetz ; † November 12, 1806 in Rendsburg ) was a Protestant theologian and general superintendent of Holstein .
Life
Johann Leonhard Callisen - eldest son of the preacher at the Preetz monastery Johannes Callisen (1695–1759) - came from a Schleswig-Holstein pastor family, to which Georg Calixt also belonged. His brother was the surgeon Heinrich Callisen .
Because of the early death of her father, Callisen was only able to study at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen for two years . Before he took up his first pastor's position in Plön , he was a private tutor for six years . Then he was pastor in Zarpen . As a senior pastor in Oldesloe (from 1782) he made after the death of his son in 1790 carefully multiple fonts at: the edification The last day of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark and About the sense of liberty of our time , which is critical of the French Revolution dealt . Therefore, after the death of Adam Struensee in 1792, he was appointed general superintendent in the Duchy of Holstein . His colleague was Jacob Georg Christian Adler .
As a theologian of Lutheran Orthodoxy with close contacts to the conservative Emkendorfer Kreis , Callisen was not without controversy among the scholars of his time:
His essay on the value of the Enlightenment of our time , which appeared in 1795 and which turned against the religion of reason , led to a violent (anonymous) reply by August Hennings , to which Matthias Claudius in turn replied with Von und Mit .
The fact that Callisen signed the Schleswig-Holstein Church Agende drawn up by his colleague in 1796 , although it contradicted his theology, led twenty years later to a posthumous attack by Johann Heinrich Voss , against whom his son Johann Friedrich Leonhard Callisen , provost and preacher in Rendsburg, made him attack , defended.
