Heinrich Callisen, born as Hinrich Callisen, (born May 11, 1740 in Preetz ; † February 5, 1824 ) was a German surgeon in the service of the Kingdom of Denmark .

Life

Heinrich Callisen, came from a Holstein pastor family . His father Johannes Callisen (1695–1759) was a preacher in the Preetz monastery , an older brother was the general superintendent Johann Leonhard Callisen .

Heinrich Callisen became Feldscher in Copenhagen . Discharged from military service, he studied medicine . With a grant from the Crown of Denmark, he made a scientific trip to France and England of several years . After returning home in 1771, he became professor and chief surgeon in the Danish fleet . In 1791 he turned down the call of the Crown Prussia to become the first professor at the Berlin School of Surgery, the Pépinière , which opened in 1795 . He became General Director of the Royal Surgical Academy in Copenhagen, founded in 1785 . After he had given up the office in 1805, he ran a doctor's practice until his death .

In December 1815 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
