Stjepan Šulek

Stjepan Šulek (also written Sulek ; born August 5, 1914 in Zagreb ; † January 16, 1986 ibid) was a Yugoslav composer and conductor .

Life

Šulek began studying music (piano, violin and composition) very early. In 1936 he graduated from the Music Academy in Zagreb (violin concert exam in the class of Prof. Vaclav Huml), where he also studied composition with Blagoje Bersa . Until 1952 he appeared as a soloist and in solo concerts; at the same time he was active in chamber music at the highest level (1936–1938 he led the Zagreb Quartet, 1939–1945 he was a member of the Macek-Sulek-Janigro trio). From 1939 he taught violin at the Zagreb Conservatory, later also composition (from 1948) and orchestration (from 1953). His works were played on a national and international level from 1945 (Europe, USA and South America). In 1948 he became a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1954 an official member and secretary of the academy's music department. From 1958 to 1964 he was chief conductor of the chamber and symphony orchestras of the Zagreb radio television and undertook numerous European tours with these ensembles. He has been regularly invited as a guest conductor by the symphony orchestras in Zagreb, Belgrade and Slovenia. For his artistic work he has received several honors and awards from the highest institutions in his country. Stjepan Sulek died on January 16, 1986 in his native Zagreb and was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery there.
