The container ship type 8138 (other spelling also B8138 ), also known as Astrotype , was built in series by the Stocznia Gdynia shipyard since the 1990s.
details
The 8138 series was built between 1997 and 2001 for the Bremen shipping company Alpha Ship. In the years of production, the type was further developed and modernized in details. A distinction is made between the basic type 8138 I, which was produced in four units, and the longer version 8138 II, from which eight ships were built. The type remained in the range until the shipyard went bankrupt in the 2000s, but was no longer ordered. The Danzig shipyard delivered individual hulls .
The ships are designed as full container ships with a deckhouse far aft . The container capacity is 1646 TEU for the basic type and 1835 TEU for the longer version. 300 to 350 refrigerated containers can be connected. The ships have eight or nine cargo holds closed with pontoon hatch covers . The ships have three ship cranes arranged amidships with a lifting capacity of 45 tons each.
The ships are powered by a MAN B&W two- stroke diesel engine with an output of around 17,200 kW . The motor acts directly on a fixed propeller and enables a speed of around 21 knots . There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
The ships were often used on container liner services in regions with poorly developed port infrastructure, for example a relatively large number of the ships were on South American services.
