Last construction version

The container ship type B-178 (other spelling also B178 or B 178 ) of the Stocznia Szczecińska ( Szczecin Shipyard ) has so far been built in a series of well over 20 units.

details

The B-178 series was built for various German and foreign shipping companies until 2009. During the years of production, the type was further developed in detail. A distinction is made between the individual types B178 / I and B178 / III. Initially presented by the Stocznia Szczecińska shipyard in Stettin, the type remained in the program of the successor company Stocznia Szczecińska Nova after its bankruptcy in 2002 to 2009. After the Stocznia Szczecińska Nova also had to file for bankruptcy, the Szczecin repair yard "Gryfia" completed its last ship, the B178 Port Gdynia , by May 2011.

Aft of a B-178 ship

The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 3104 TEU, of which 250 TEU reefers can be used. The ships have four holds closed with pontoon hatch covers . The ships have three ship cranes arranged amidships with a lifting capacity of 45 tons each.

The propulsion of the ships consists of a two-stroke diesel engine built under a MAN B&W license from a Spanish manufacturer with an output of around 26,000 kW. The motor acts directly on a fixed propeller and enables a speed of a good 22 knots. There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

The ships are often used on liner services in regions with poorly developed port infrastructure; for example, a relatively large number of ships are on South American services.

Demeter incident

On October 21, 2017, the Demeter , a ship owned by Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG in Hamburg and sailing for CMA CGM , was attacked by eight pirates in Bonny Bay, south of Port Harcourt in Nigeria . Six of the 20 crew members on board the ship were abducted. They were released after about three weeks.
