Stojan Batič

Stojan Batič (born February 2, 1925 in Trbovlje , Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ; † September 17, 2015 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav and Slovenian sculptor .

life and work

As a child from a working-class family, Stojan Batič had to work in a coal mine as a teenager. At the age of 19 he became a member of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army , which fought against the occupation of Yugoslavia by the Wehrmacht .

After the end of the Second World War , he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Ljubljana , where he studied sculpture under the supervision of Professor Boris Kalin and Frančišek Smerdu . In 1957 he finished his studies in Ljubljana and studied in Paris with the sculptor Ossip Zadkine .

Batič became known for sculptures that record the history of Slovenia as well as European and Oriental myths. His best known works are the Peaceful Revolution of Slovenia at Ljubljana Castle and the Itaka series of figures . In 1995 he exhibited in the Mestna Galerija (City Gallery) in Ljubljana. He lived and worked in Ljubljana.

Awards

In 1960, Batič received the Prešeren Grand Prize , the highest award for artistic and cultural achievements in Slovenia.
