The remains of Stowey Castle

Stowey Castle (or Nether Stowey Castle , locally and The Mount ) is a Outbound castle in the village of Nether Stowey in the Quantock Hills in the English county of Somerset . The remains of the Norman moth are considered a Scheduled Monument .

description

Map of the castle grounds

The castle was situated on a small isolated hill Leigh country Slates ( shale ) from the Devonian , about 119 meters high. It consisted of a donjon with a square floor plan (either entirely made of stone or with a wooden structure, but a stone foundation) and its defenses, as well as an inner castle and an outer castle . The mound rises up to 9 meters above the 2 meter wide trench, which in turn is 2 meters deep. It's flat at the top. In the middle there are foundations 10 meters by 10 meters with internal subdivisions.

history

Alfred of Spain is the Norman Lord of Stowey listed in the Domesday Book . The construction of the castle is usually attributed to either himself or his daughter Isabel . The first documentary mention of Stowey Castle is in a charter from 1154.

At the top of the mound, excavations were carried out by amateurs in the 19th century, but no record of any finds is found. The piles on the mound are dumps from these excavations, which were carried out to uncover the foundations of the donjon. But it could also be the remains of towers. The foundations of blue Liass rubble are the only visible structural remains of the castle, which stood on the conical mound and was surrounded by a moat about 250 meters in circumference.

The castle was destroyed in the 15th century, possibly as punishment for the local Baron Audley who participated in the second Cornish uprising of 1497, led by Perkin Warbeck . Some of the blocks were used to build Stowey Court in the village.
