Ströck-Brot GmbH is one of the largest Austrian bakery companies based in Vienna . The handicraft bakery has been operating sales branches in Vienna and the surrounding area since 1991 and supplies the food trade.

history

founding

The Ströck bakery was founded in 1970 in Vienna- Donaustadt by Johann Ströck, a master baker from Kittsee in Burgenland . His son Gerhard took over the company in 1977 with the help of his mother Hilda, which at the time had just ten employees and was producing in the cellar at Langobardenstraße 9. A short time later, the second son Robert followed him into the company. The central sales point was on Langobardenstrasse. The Ströck bakery also supplied small customers, including retail outlets and catering customers.

growth

The product range was continuously expanded and in 1989 production moved to the current location in Vienna-Donaustadt, Industriestraße 68. The branch network was continuously expanded from 1991 onwards under the direction of Gabriele and Irene Ströck. The branch network now includes over 70 locations in Vienna and the surrounding area (including Gerasdorf, Kittsee and Parndorf) and represents another large sales channel in addition to the sale of goods via food retailers in Austria, export to Russia and Norway.

Production expansion

While the location at Industriestrasse 68 was initially too spacious, the growing order situation soon resulted in a shortage of space in the production facility. After several extensions, additions and superstructures, during which the original usable area of the building was increased fivefold, the Ströck family decided in 1999 to partially outsource production to a property only 500 meters away, which was acquired by Nestlé .

sustainability

Despite the size of the company that has now reached, Ströck continues to rely on manual production methods. The flour used is 100% grown and processed in Austria, and the bakery has long-term partnerships with producers from the region. Organic products have also been baked since 1994, and today 35% of the flour used is organic. Ströck has been using FAIRTRADE coffee since 2006 and, two years later, sources the beans from organic farming.

Leftover products are donated to charitable organizations or used in animal feed production. Even anti-waste apps as "too good to go" are supported with Ströck products. In 2012 all plastic carrier bags were replaced by paper and fabric carrier bags. From 2013, the gradual changeover to sustainable CPLA cutlery took place in all branches.

The first Keep Cups (reusable cups) were introduced in 2014. In October 2016, it was introduced in all branches. Ströck also supports the pilot project to reduce the myCoffeeCup disposable cups of the City of Vienna. In 2017, all branches switched to sustainable paper napkins (100% recycled material).

In spring 2018, the company announced that it only used free-range eggs for the conventional range and organic free-range eggs for the organic product line. The eggs for sale in the branches come from Austrian organic free-range farming.

In 2019, over 48 apprentices were trained in the company.

Ströck is a partner of charitable events and supports numerous organizations and associations. There has been a collaboration with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna since 2017 .

criticism

Trade unions and labor lawyers have in some cases strongly criticized the working conditions at Ströck. The company management is said to have prevented the establishment of a works council for years. However, there has been an elected works council since November 2013.
