The Daugavpils Tram is the tram network in the eastern Latvian city of Daugavpils , operated by the Daugavpils satiksme (Daugavpils Traffic).

The first line opened on November 5, 1946 in the Russian broad gauge . The pantographs used on the railway are a specialty. In 1950 the second route followed through the city. This was extended in 1951 and 1958. Further extensions followed in 1965 and 1990, so that today there is a total of 27 kilometers of track network. Today there are three tram lines in Daugavpils. The operation is well maintained and a route extension has been put into operation in recent years. Plans have also been drawn up to modernize the vehicle fleet.

history

The idea of introducing public transport in Daugavpils (then the name of Daugavpils) matured towards the end of the 19th century. In 1893 Dünaburg had 70,000 inhabitants and owned 38 factories. In 1895 the city began negotiations to build a tram route. Specific projects were planned in 1910 and 1912. Initially, the projects were not carried out due to lack of money, then because of the First World War , the Latvian War of Independence and the devastation that followed.

The final decision to build the tram was not made until May 1946. Construction work began on June 11, 1946. Construction work for the first single-track tram route from the tannery to the train station lasted 123 days. First four Phoenix trams from 1901 ran on this route . In 1947 the second phase of the project was approved: a 3.5 km stretch from Sarkanarmias Street (today: November 18th Street) to the old suburb. In 1949 a branch line led from the central market to the citadel, in which a military academy had existed since February 23, 1948 .

The next line was built in 1962 when the tracks were extended from the tannery to the man-made fiber factory. In the mid-1970s, the main route from the train station to the man-made fiber factory was completely expanded to two tracks.

In 1987 there were four lines. In August – September lines 3 train station ↔ Stropi and 4 man-made fiber factory ↔ citadel were connected to the new line 3 citadel ↔ Stropi .

On February 5, 2020, a new section of line 3 to Stropi was put into operation via the regional hospital. This 2.1 km long, single-track new line with two new stops replaces the previous straight line with undeveloped area.

Tickets and tariff

Tickets can only be purchased from the conductors in the railways. Single tickets cost EUR 0.50 (January 2019), multi-trip or day tickets are not available.

Vehicle fleet

The Daugavpils tram has 44 railcars: 20 railcars of the Riga wagon construction factory of the RVR-6 type, twelve of the KTM-5 type and one of the KTM-8 type of the Ust-Katawer wagon construction factory , and eleven of the Tatra T3 D type of the Czechoslovakian tram Manufacturer ČKD Tatra , which were taken over used by the Schwerin tram .

There are also three company cars, including a snow plow.

In 2011, planning began to renovate the infrastructure in order to be able to buy 12 new low-floor vehicles. In December 2018, a contract was signed between Daugavpils Satiksme and UAB Railvec for the delivery of 8 low-floor vehicles.

Lines

  • Line 1: Bahnhof ( Lat .: Stacija) ↔ Butļerova iela
It was opened in 1946. It originally connected the tannery (today: Saules veikals) with the train station. In the early 1960s, in connection with the construction of the synthetic fiber factory and the associated settlement, it was decided to extend the route to
Butļerova iela . In 1962, this 2.2 km extension with the depot at the terminal was put into operation. In the mid-1970s, this line was completely double-tracked.
  • Line 2: Butļerova ielaflour mill "Dinella" (Lat .: Maiznīca "Dinella")
This line was opened in 1947 as the city's second tram line. From line 1, it serves a branch of 2.7 km in length to the old suburb (grain mill "Dinella"). In the future it is to be extended by 1.9 km to the New Suburb.
  • Line 3: Citadel (Lat .: Cietoksnis) ↔ Stropu ezers
This line was opened in 1949 and connected the citadel with the central market (Lat .: Tirgus) over a length of 1.3 km. It was later connected to the main line. In 1959 the branch to the Waldbühne Stropi (Lat .: Stropu estrāde) was put into operation. In 1960 it was extended to Lake Stropi (Lat .: Stropu ezers). From the tannery on, the line is single-track with two switches at the cemetery (Lat .: Komunāle kapi) and at the forest stage. In February 2020, a new route to connect the hospital was opened. Since then, the direct route through the forest is no longer served.
