Network plan

The Vitoria-Gasteiz tram is operated by the Basque railway company EuskoTren under the name Euskotren Tranbia. It was put into operation on December 23, 2008. Construction of this tram began on September 12, 2006. It connects the most densely populated parts of Vitoria with the city center. The network consists of a line with two branches and allows passengers to reach the districts of Ibaiondo, Lakua and Abetxuko within 15 minutes from the center. The first test drives began on October 6, 2008 on the branch to Ibaiondo. The branch to Abetxuko was put into operation in July 2009.

history

First plans

As early as 1995, the Basque government offered the municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz the financing and construction of a tram line. However, the project could not prevail due to the dislike of the citizens and the city council. After the success of EuskoTran with the Bilbao tram , the picture turned, so that nine years later Vitoria decided to build its own tram.

Building history

Construction of the Vitoria tram began in September 2006. The first line connecting the city center with the northern district of Lakua has been in operation since December 23, 2008.

A second line - also to the north - was opened on July 10, 2009. At first it only led to the Kañabento stop. Since the extension by 750 m and two more stops in September 2012, the tram has been running to the center of the Abetxuko district. The route network thus reached a length of 12 km.

On February 15, 2020, an extension to the south by 1.4 km was put into operation. Three new stops were created. The final stop is near the university.

Planned route extension

In autumn 2019, the construction of a branch from the Florida stop towards Salburua with five more stops was approved.

Vehicle inventory at the start of operations

For the operation of the line, the decision was made to use five-part articulated multiple units of the Urbos 2 type from the Basque company CAF : In 2008 and 2009, CAF delivered a total of 11 bi-directional articulated trains consisting of five elements .

Supplementary deliveries 2019

Due to a strong increase in the number of passengers to 8.3 million passengers in 2018, an expansion of the vehicle fleet was necessary: three seven-unit Urbos 600 vehicles were ordered from CAF in 2017, and another vehicle was ordered in May 2019 to amend the sales contract. The delivery of these vehicles took place in December 2019.

There is also a contract to convert the five-part railcars to seven-part ones.
