StreetUniverCity , also StreetUniverCity Berlin eV (SUB) , is an independent provider of extracurricular educational opportunities for young people and young adults who are disadvantaged or who have failed in the job market. The name StreetUniverCity is a made-up word that is inspired by the English language and stands for a “street university”.

history

StreetUniverCity was initiated in 2006 by three people, the Italian artist Giò di Sera, the film and television actor Erhan Emre and the director of the Kreuzberg cultural center "Naunynritze" Martin Kesting, to support young people in socially disadvantaged areas. It started its social work in June 2007 and is aimed particularly at young people in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

Goals and Activities

In StreetUniverCity adolescents and young adults from to deprived areas from 15 to 25 years skills and in an informal and cultural learning environment social skills to acquire. These are intended to help them start their professional life.

StreetUniverCity writes about their goals:

Our main goals are to help young people from socially disadvantaged areas to increase their self-esteem by showing them that they can achieve something, to develop a certain status and dignity that builds on their skills, possibilities and knowledge and not on physical strength or age. Ultimately, we want to help them take their lives into their own hands, be able to choose and start a professional career .

The motto of StreetUniverCity is "trust yourself" (English for: trust yourself ).

StreetUniverCity offers seminars, courses and workshops at various locations in Berlin-Kreuzberg as part of a teaching program that lasts for several months. These deal with the areas of politics and society, computer technology, theater and acting, film, art and graphics, sport and fitness. The program includes compulsory courses on ethics, law and politics as well as anti-violence and job application training, business start-up seminars and English lessons. The organizers rely heavily on working with mentors and role models from the young people's cultural environment, using the language, styles and codes of the youth scenes. Courses in music, singing and rap are also part of the program, which take place in a recording studio.

With the final certificate “Master of StreetUniverCity” the participants receive a certificate of the social and creative skills they have acquired. It is not a formal qualification, but should serve potential employers as evidence of the youth's commitment and interest in education.

Supporters and lecturers

The supporters, called “SUBporters”, and lecturers include hip-hop musician and music producer Afrika Bambaataa from New York City , the soul and R&B singer Joy Denalane from Kreuzberg, known as the “German Soul Queen”, and the film and theater director Neco Çelik , the singer Muhabbet and the politician Cem Özdemir .
