Freiherr vom Stein Prize

The Freiherr vom Stein Prize for social innovation is awarded by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS together with the Foundation for Employment and the Humboldt University of Berlin and is endowed with 25,000 euros. This makes it one of the most highly endowed prizes for civic engagement in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The prize was awarded for the first time in 1957. Different subject areas were awarded, from research work on city history to civic education projects to the history of civic social reform .

In 1995, the award was made available to honor the commitment of citizens in the new federal states to the common good. In particular, private initiatives and achievements by personalities, associations or institutions are honored. The prize is awarded in full and presented by the President of the Humboldt University in Berlin.
