Strega or Liquore Strega is an Italian herbal liqueur that has been produced by Distilleria Strega Alberti Benevento SpA in Benevento , Campania , since 1860 . The liqueur gets its yellow color from the use of saffron . Strega has an alcohol content of 40 % by volume . The roughly 70 different ingredients also include mint and fennel . Strega is a digestif , so you drink it after your meal.

Strega looks similar to the Galliano , even if the yellow is not quite as strong. It is a slightly sweet, not too strict liqueur with a full, complex taste with clear notes of mint or conifer . Strega is also used to flavor a cake specialty, the Torta Caprese .

Origin of the name

Strega is the Italian word for witch , and because a witch legend in the Benevento area can be traced back to the time of the Lombard invasion, this name was a logical choice. In the English-speaking world, this liqueur is also known as the witch .

Literature Prize Premio Strega

The Premio Strega (Strega Literature Prize) is the most prestigious literary award in Italy today. It was started in 1947 by Guido Alberti , the then owner of the company, and his friends, the writer Maria Bellonci and her husband Goffredo.

Appearance in literature and film

Strega plays an important role in the film Der Ruf der Sibylla (1984) by Clemens Klopfenstein . The couple Clara ( Christine Lauterburg ) and Balz ( Max Rüdlinger ) traveling through Italy acquire magical powers through Strega on the one hand, and Amaro Sibilla liqueur on the other .

In the film Made , directed by Jon Favreau , Ricky ( Vince Vaughn ), after ordering a strega in an Italian restaurant, is puffed up by Ruiz ( Sean “P. Diddy” Combs ), his gang leader, with the words: “You're re-ordering a witch the food? Bad style! ”The waiter agrees with Ruiz that Strega is an aperitif . Both Kellner and Ruiz are wrong.

In the novel The Godfather by Mario Puzo Don Vito Corleone and his colleagues drink several times Strega.

In the soap opera Zeit der Sehnsucht , the villain Stefano DiMera also drinks Strega.
