Stremnishmore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stremnishmore is a derelict town on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Stremnishmore was about 400 m away from the southeast coast of the Oa peninsula and Cape Rubha nan Leacan , which marks the southernmost extent of the peninsula. The closest settlements were the villages of Asabus and Ballychatrigan in the northwest and northeast, each about 1.5 km away, which are also abandoned today . The nearest settlement that is still inhabited today is Kinnabus .

Stremnishmore was the end point of the road that led south via Cragabus and Ballychatrigan. A creek flows southwest of Stremnishmore, drains from Loch Kinnabus and flows east of Stremnishmore into the Atlantic Ocean . In 1861, 80 people were counted in Stremnishmore, divided into 14 families. Of these, 47 were female and 33 were male. Another 12 people from two families lived in the associated village of Stremnish Lots . In 1981 the remains of ten buildings were counted in Stremnishmore, but the settlement was already deserted at that time.

The remains of a cairn have been discovered south of Stremnishmore . It measures about 16 × 8 m 2 and was built 50 m off the coastline.
