Streptolysin O (Tacy) is a protein of the cell walls of Streptococcus pyogenes with hemolytic activity . It is released in inflammatory infections by streptococci and is an ectotoxin that lyses red blood cells . Antibodies against streptolysin O, known as antistreptolysin O , are formed after infection .
TACY belongs to the group of thiol-activated cytolysins , toxins that are produced by a number of Gram-positive bacteria and are characterized by their ability to dissolve cell membranes containing cholesterol , their reversible inactivation through oxidation and their capacity to bind cholesterol.
As part of the microbiological-serological diagnosis, streptolysin can be detected with the help of the so-called antistreptolysin test (AST).
