Striga aspera is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga aspera is up to 53 cm tall, parasitic , annual plant . It is slender, unbranched or branched in the middle of the stem and has thick curls of hair. The stem is indistinctly rectangular. The leaves are (rarely 10 to) 20 to 35 (rarely up to 60) × 1 (rarely up to 2) mm in size, linearly shaped, with entire margins and longer than the internodes . They are opposite and protruding or facing upwards.

The flowers are alternately in open racemes that are shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are supported by two bracts , which have a length of 8 to 30 (rarely up to 40) mm, are foliage-like and are longer than the calyx .

The calyx is five-ribbed and 5 to 10 mm long. The calyx tube is 4 to 6 mm long and has five calyx lobes that are almost identically shaped, linear and, at 3 to 5 mm, almost as long as the calyx tube. The crown is slightly bilobed and colored pink-purple or rarely white. The corolla-tube is 12 to 16 mm long, curved, widened above the calyx and lightly glandular-hairy. The lobes of the lower lip are 4 to 8 × 2 to 5 mm long and conversely egg-shaped, the upper lip is 3 to 7 × 4 to 7 mm long, notched or almost cut off and about as wide as long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.
