Striga brachycalyx is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga brachycalyx is up to 70 cm tall, parasitic , annual plant . It is slender, branched in the middle of the stem , scaly and hairy with stiff hair. The stem is grooved rectangular. The leaves are (rarely 5 to) 20 to 37 (rarely up to 50) × 1 (rarely up to 2) mm in size, linear, the leaf margin is whole and the veining is indistinct. They are almost opposite, are directed ascending or protruding and are longer than the internodes .

The flowers are alternate in an open, grape-shaped inflorescence that is shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are accompanied by two bracts . The lower bracts are 5 to 20 × 1 mm in size, linear and as long or longer than the calyx . The upper bracts are awl-shaped and shorter than the calyx.

The calyx is five-ribbed, 3 to 6 mm long. The calyx tube is 1.5 to 3 mm long and has five almost identically shaped, linear, 1 to 3.5 mm long calyx lobes. The calyx lobes and the calyx tube thus have approximately the same length. The crown is purple with a white center, the corolla tube is (rare 6 to) from 9 to 19 mm long, curved, extends above the cup and sparsely glandular hairs. The lobes of the lower lip are 2 to 3 (rarely up to 5) × 1 to 2 mm long, the tips of the lobes are blunt. The upper lip is 1 to 2 (rarely up to 4) × 2 to 4 mm long and ovoid.

distribution

Striga brachycalyx is widespread in West and Central Africa and is known there from the Ivory Coast to Burkina Faso , Mali , Ghana , Togo , Nigeria and in the east to Sudan . The species was also found in the Republic of the Congo . The species is widespread and is often found in dense populations in savannahs . Although the species is quite common, it does not affect cultivated plants.
