Striga gastonii is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).
description
Striga gastonii is a succulent, tufted, hairless, parasitic , annual plant that grows to a height of only 7 cm . The stem is indistinctly square. The scale-like leaves have a size of 1 to 4 × 1 to 2 mm, are lanceolate, close-fitting, with entire margins and have indistinct veins. They are longer than the internodes .
The flowers are in a dense spike-like inflorescence that is longer than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two bracts . These are 3 × 1 to 2 mm in size, lanceolate and shorter than the calyx .
The calyx is five-ribbed and 3 to 5.5 mm long. The calyx tube has a length of 2 to 4 mm and is covered with five almost identical, awl-like, 1 to 2 mm long calyx tips. This means that the calyx tips are shorter than the calyx tube. The crown is purple and weakly bilobed. The corolla-tube is 8 mm long, curved, widened above the calyx and sparsely hairy glandular. The lobes of the lower lip are 4 × 1 to 2 mm in size and are inverted ovoid. The upper lip has a size of 1 × 1 to 2 mm, is notched and has a blunt tip.
Occurrence
Striga gastonii is endemic to southern Chad and the Central African Republic and grows there on Lepidagathis ( acanthus family ) parasitizing on lateritic soils.
