Striga klingii is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga klingii is a parasitic annual plant that grows up to 86 cm high . They grow plump and stiff upright and are often three-branched directly below the inflorescences . They are scaly and hairy with stiff hair, the stem is indistinctly rectangular. The leaves are 20 to 40 (rarely up to 70) × 4 to 7 (rarely up to 12) mm, they are narrowly elliptical, have a blunt tip, are roughly toothed and have three veins. They stand opposite and are shorter than the internodes .

The flowers are dense and overlapping in a very compact inflorescence, which is significantly shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two bracts , the lower bracts have a size of 10 to 20 × 2 to 4 mm, they are lanceolate and longer than the calyx . The upper bracts are also lanceolate, but only about as long as the calyx.

The calyx is twelve to fifteen ribs and 8 to 10 mm long. The calyx tube has a length of 5 to 6 mm. It is covered with four lobes of the same shape or five unevenly shaped. These are slightly shorter than the tube, 3 to 5 mm long and shaped like a ruler. The crown is purple. The corolla tube has a length of 10 to 13 mm, is curved and widened at the level of the calyx teeth and has glandular or non-glandular hair. The lobes of the lower lip are 4 to 7 × 2 to 4 mm in size, they are ovate and protruding. The upper lip is 2 to 3 × 3 to 4 mm in size, inverted ovoid and notched.

Occurrence

Striga klingii occurs in West and Central Africa . The distribution area extends from Senegal to the south of Sudan , there are disjoint occurrences in Tanzania and Malawi . The species grows in small populations and parasitizes grasses in humid savannas .
