Strophidon sathete (giant delta moray eel) is the longest living moray eel with a length of up to four meters. It is the only species of the monotypical genus Strophidon . This moray eel is found in the Indo-West Pacific , the Red Sea, and from eastern Africa to the western Pacific. spread.

features

Strophidon sathete usually reaches a body length of 70 to 200 cm TL . The color of the upper side is brownish gray, the underside lighter or evenly brown including the head and fins. Hamilton's copy was brownish black, the underside of the head a dirty yellow. The unscaled, moderately elongated body is cylindrical towards the head and compressed laterally along the tail. The eyes are small, the mouth is very large and extends behind the eyes. The sharp little teeth sit in two rows, the front and inner row are larger. The head is not clearly separated from the trunk, although the profile slopes moderately towards the mouth. The dorsal fin begins on the head in front of the gill openings. The species has 183 to 196 vertebrae.

Habitat and way of life

Strophidon sathete lives on the muddy seabed and in estuaries , sometimes the species can also be found in rivers or in the interior of bays . Their diet consists mainly of small fish and crustaceans .

Research history

Hamilton described the species in 1822 in his book An account of the fishes found in the river Ganges and its branches under the scientific name Muraenophis sathete . He described the specimen collected from the estuaries near Calcutta as "a very ugly eel-like tiger that grows up to five or six feet long" (6 feet corresponds to about 1.83 m).
