The district of San Juan de la Virgen is one of the 6 districts of the Tumbes province in the Tumbes region in the far northwest of Peru . The district was founded on January 12, 1871. In the 2017 census, 4572 inhabitants lived in an area of 118.71 km². In 1993 the population was 3641, in 2007 3848. The administrative seat is the town of San Juan de la Virgen with 1559 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan de la Virgen is located on the right bank of the Río Tumbes at an altitude of 40 m , 7 km south-southeast of the provincial and regional capital Tumbes .
The district of San Juan de la Virgen is located in the central northeast of the Tumbes province. The Río Tumbes River runs along the western district boundary. In the south there is a wooded ridge.
The district of San Juan de la Virgen borders in the north on the district Tumbes , in the east on the district Matapalo ( province Zarumilla ), in the south on the district Pampas de Hospital and in the west on the districts San Jacinto and Corrales .
