The vortex pots in winter 2019 at low water

The Strudeltöpf Schwarzwasserbach natural monument is located on the Naturbrücke plot in the Mittelberg municipality in the Bregenz district , Vorarlberg , Austria .

Origin and location

These three whirlpool pots are large pools , also called whirlpool holes or erroneously referred to as glacier pots or glacier mills. The shape of the vortex pots shows the direction of rotation of the water as it flows through. The natural monument was created by the millennia-long erosion effect of the Schwarzwasserbach through the expansion of existing rock fissures in the Schrattenkalk. Larger and smaller debris pieces are put into the vortex pots at high water and turned there until they are round. At the same time, the pots are enlarged by the abrasion.

The natural bridge parcel and the Strudel pots natural monument are located at around 1075  m above sea level. A. about at kilometers of water (Schwarzwasserbach) 2.20. The center of Riezlern is about 1200 meters as the crow flies , the L201 ( Kleinwalsertalstraße ) about 750 meters.

A few meters above the confluence of the Auerbach (also: Aubach) in the Schwarzwasserbach is the natural monument natural bridge on the Schwarzwasserbach and at the Kesselschwandbrücke (Kesselschwand road), about 40 meters below the natural bridge, the natural monument Schwarzwasserbach waterfall .

Individual evidence

  1. Glacier pots and glacier mills were created by meltwater on the edge or on the bottom of glacial glaciers and not, as here, by the flowing water of the Schwarzwasserbach.
