Today it consists of more than 60 members, almost all of whom are non-musical students. The SSO is a member of the Federal Association of German Lover's Orchestra (BDLO) and Jeunesses Musicales Germany .

founding

In autumn 1990 the SSO Marburg was founded by a student initiative and led by the Marburg conductor Gerhard Weber. After Weber's departure in 1993, the Association of Student Symphony Orchestra Marburg eV was founded and found its future conductor in Burchard Schäfer, who was studying music in Frankfurt at the time . After the 15th concert anniversary in 2006, the Berlin conductor Dr. Ulrich Metzger is the artistic director of the orchestra.

Concerts

Since it was founded, the SSO Marburg has offered two final concerts at the end of each semester . In 1996 the classic open air on the Schlossparkbühne for the opening of the Marburg city festival “ 3 Days of Marburg ” was initiated and also presented in the years 1997–2002 and from 2007 every two years. The SSO Marburg has also been organizing children's concerts since 1996. The 5th children's concert took place on the Hessentag 2010 in Stadtallendorf . Here Willi Weitzel took over the role of speaker in Prokofiev's children 's fairy tale Peter and the Wolf . This performance was repeated on July 1, 2011 at the Federal President's summer party .

Since 1997 the orchestra has played a New Year's concert in Marburg on January 1st every year. Since 2010 the orchestra has also been organizing another New Year's concert in Stadtallendorf on January 2nd.

In addition to numerous orchestras Travel (u. A. organization

The orchestra is completely self-governing and independent. The concert program (with the exception of solo concerts) is chosen by the members. The concert organization is carried out by the voluntary, student initiative of the orchestra board. In the past there have been occasional collaborations with the Marburger Konzertverein, the Musicological Institute of the Philipps University and the Young Marburg Philharmonic.
