The StudioCanal SA (proper spelling STUDIO CANAL ), headquartered in Paris is an international French media company in the field of film co-production , film distribution and trading of film rights . With its own film catalog of over 5,000 French, British, German, Italian and American films, Studiocanal ranks third in the world after Warner Bros. Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer .

history

The company was founded in 1986 under the name Canal + Production as a subsidiary of the French pay-TV channel Canal + , which was launched in 1984 , and was renamed Le Studio Canal + in 1988 . The name change to Studiocanal in 2000 came along with the acquisition of Seagram , owner of Universal Studios , by Canal + 's parent company Vivendi . Through the acquisition of competing companies such as Carolco Pictures , Ealing Studios , London Film Productions or ABPC , the number of films in the Studiocanal portfolio has increased over the years.

International expansion

In 2006 Studiocanal bought the British film distributor Optimum Releasing , which has operated as Studiocanal UK since 2011 . In 2008, the German Kinowelt GmbH from Leipzig was acquired, which was renamed Studiocanal GmbH in 2011 and since then, based in Berlin, has formed the German division of Studiocanal. In 2012, Studiocanal entered the Australian-New Zealand market with the purchase of the Australian Hoyts Distribution . In other countries, Studiocanal cooperates with local film distributors. Studiocanal has also been active in television productions since 2012 through investments in Tandem Communications and the British Red Production Company . Chairman and CEO of Studiocanal has been the French media manager and Canal + employee since 2000, Didier Lupfer, since 2015.
