V. “Part of the educational work in Jerusalem of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) , which has since been the main financial sponsor of the programs.

history

The study program “Study in Israel” owes its impetus to the work of the “Working Group Jews and Christians” at the German Evangelical Church Congress and the “Study Commission for Church and Judaism of the EKD”. On the initiative of Peter von der Osten-Sacken , Rolf Rendtorff , Martin Stöhr and Michael Krupp , the study program “Study in Israel” was launched in 1978. Since then - with only a one-year break in the 2002/03 academic year due to the Second Intifada  - up to 20 theology students of different denominations have been sent to Jerusalem every year. The contents of the course are the Hebrew language and the Jewish interpretation of the Bible in the form of the Talmud and Midrash . In 2006, under the title “Theological training in Jerusalem”, a program for the training of church and church-related professionals was added.

Goal setting

"Studium in Israel" has set itself the goal of promoting and promoting the Christian-Jewish dialogue in theology and the church, as an introductory text on the homepage makes clear:

“Demarcation and prejudices have determined Christian teaching and church behavior towards Jews for a long time. It was only after the murder of millions of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany that a rethink began. 'Studium in Israel' strives for a theology after the Shoah, whose interpretation of the Bible and confession is free from hostility towards Jews and which knows that it is still dependent on Judaism. Mission to the Jews is definitely not represented by 'Studium in Israel'. "
