The storm Victoria was a hurricane in North and Central Europe in February 2020. In the UK , the storm had the name Dennis . Victoria immediately followed Hurricane Sabine .
Meteorological process
The storm low began its meteorological career as a rapidly moving eastward North Atlantic low and was named Victoria on February 15, 2020 by the TU Berlin . It then swept across Great Britain , the Netherlands , Belgium , France and Germany , among others .
Predicted extent
The DWD warned of severe gusts of wind in and on the North Sea, in the immediately adjacent inland areas and in northern Schleswig-Holstein. Hurricane gusts are also not excluded. Only lower speeds were forecast for southern Germany. Meteorologists warned of gusts of wind at speeds of up to 220 km / h. According to weather models, Hurricane Victoria could reach an air pressure of 915 to 926 hectopascals, which would be record-breaking and “is otherwise only known from hurricanes”, says Jan Schenk from the Weather Channel. For the North Sea coast and the Elbe there is a risk of a storm surge.
Actual extent
On Saturday evening, “Victoria” finally reached a core pressure of close to 920 hPa and is therefore in fourth place among the extra-tropical storms with the lowest core pressure in the North Atlantic. Hurricane Braer, a hurricane over Greenland and a low pressure area over Iceland and Scotland respectively, are ranked 1,2 and 3. In addition, the Germany-wide decade record was broken (2nd February decade from February 11th to 20th). So far, the weather station in Freiburg (BaWü) with 21.1 degrees Celsius, measured on February 15, 1958, was the record holder. The new front runner in the second decade of February is now Müllheim (BaWü) with 21.5 ° C. In Hesse and Lower Saxony , many trees fell on the streets and tracks and led to numerous road closures and train cancellations. Hundreds of flights were canceled throughout Great Britain at the weekend due to the storm.
