Under your protection and shield ( Latin: Sub tuum praesidium ) is one of the oldest Marian prayers and a Marian antiphon .

Evidence can be found as early as the third century in a Greek papyrus fragment in the John Rylands Library No. 470. Hence it is to be Pope Paul VI. according to "admirable for its age and magnificent for its content". The use of the term “ Theotokos” ( Greek Θεοτόκος theotókos ), traceable since Origen, is particularly striking . It shows that this content of belief was already familiar to the early church (cf. Gregor von Nazianz , Oratio 24,10 Migne PG 35, 1180). The statement was first raised to the first mariological dogma at the Council of Ephesus (431 AD).

The prayer is:

Sub tuum præsidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus (nostris), sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. (Domina nostra, mediatrix nostra, advocata nostra, tuo filio nos reconcilia, tuo filio nos commenda, tuo filio nos repræsenta.) Amen.	We flee under your protection and protection, O holy Theotokos. Do not disdain our prayer in our troubles, but deliver us at all times from all dangers, O glorious and blessed virgin. (Our wife, our mediator, our advocate. Reconcile us to your son, recommend us to your son, put us before your son.) Amen.

The prayer was often set to music in classical occidental music. Jan Dismas Zelenka alone created ten settings (ZWV 157). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the Offertorium Sub tuum praesidium KV 198 (158b).
