Subarnapur (also Sonapur , Sonpur or Sonepur ) is a city in the east Indian state of Odisha (Orissa). It lies at the mouth of the Tel River in the Mahanadi and is the capital of the district of the same name .

Subarnapur had 20,770 inhabitants in 2011, compared to 17,535 in 2001. In 1901 there were only 8,887 residents. Of the 2001 population, 53% were men and 47% women. The literacy rate is 74% (Indian average: 59.5%) with 82% for men and 65% for women.

history

The Prince of Sambalpur Balabhadra Deva conquered the area around Subarnapur district in the early 17th century by Boudh -Fürsten Siddhabhanja Deva . Balabhadra Deva's successor Madhukara Deva converted the area around Subarnapur into the vassal state of Sonpur and gave it to his second son Madan Gopal , who ruled it as a separate principality from 1640. The principality remained until it was converted into an Orissan district on January 1, 1948.

Personalities

  • Satya Narayan Bohidar (born August 1, 1913, † December 31, 1980) - worked out the Sambalpuri dialect of the Oriyas language by creating a dictionary, but also wrote biographies and translations in the Sambalpuri dialect.
