The Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (short SIA ) is an automobile manufacturer with headquarters in Lafayette (Indiana) in the United States . It is a full subsidiary of Subaru .

history

In May 1986 Fuji Heavy Industries (now Subaru) and Isuzu agreed on a joint venture for production in the USA. At the end of the year, Lafayette, Indiana, was selected from 13 possible locations.

On March 17, 1987, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc. was founded in Indiana. Fuji Heavy Industries owned 51% and Isuzu 49% of the company. Two months later, the foundation stone was laid for the new plant, which was completed at the end of December 1988. Pre-production started on May 15, 1989. Regular production started on September 11, 1989 with the Subaru Legacy and the Isuzu pick-up .

In July 1990 the plant was converted to two-shift operation. By July 1994 a production of 500,000 units had been reached, by March 1997 already one million. By April 2002, two million vehicles had been produced, more than half of which belonged to the Isuzu brand.

As of January 1, 2003, SIA became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries. A day later, the name was Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. changed. Isuzu vehicle production continued (on a small scale) but ended on July 23, 2004.

Toyotas were produced between 2007 and 2016 . 1000 new jobs were created for this. The targeted production of 100,000 pieces corresponded to a little more than a third of the total capacity. Toyota's withdrawal was used to make further investments, jobs were not cut. Toyota's influence on the company and on the production processes was also rated positively in retrospect.

On December 9, 2016, a production figure of 5 million vehicles was reached, of which more than three million belonged to the Subaru brand. In 2018, 348,597 units were produced.

The plant has a theoretical (and approved) production capacity of 514,000 vehicles. By spring 2019, $ 2.2 billion had been invested in the plant. 5963 employees (including temporary workers) are employed in 2 production shifts (and a third maintenance shift).

In June 2017, the SIA engine plant, which opened in early 2002, produced the two millionth engine. Since 2004, the Lafayette plant has been the first automobile factory to no longer dispose of any waste in landfills in accordance with Zero Waste .

Models

The first Isuzu model was a pickup truck . In May 1990 the Isuzu Rodeo was added. From January 1998 the Isuzu Amigo was produced, from January 2001 the Isuzu Axiom .

Subaru initially only relied on the Legacy / Outback (with the corresponding model changes), which reached the 2 million mark in September 2017. There were also the Baja (from July 2002, no longer shown on the website in 2019) and the Tribeca (April 2005). The last models added to the portfolio were the Impreza in November 2016 and the Subaru Ascent in May 2018 .

From November 16, 1993, SIA created the Honda Passport , a model derived from the Isuzu Rodeo by Badge Engineering. In July 1997, as for the sister model Isuzu Rodeo, the change to the next generation of models took place.

From February 28, 2007, the Toyota Camry was manufactured. (from September 2011 the new model generation). By March 22, 2013, 500,000 units of this model had been produced. Production of Toyotas ended on May 27, 2016.

Remarks

  1. In October 2001, Isuzu had already reached the one million vehicle mark. Since Subaru hit the one million unit mark a little later in 2002, considering the Honda models, it can be assumed that the distribution was evenly balanced by then.
  2. Toyota has held a minority stake of 8.7% since 2005 (or 16.5% since 2008) in the parent company in Japan.
  3. For the year 2011 only 79-000 pieces are given. See 75 Years of TOYOTA - Overview of Overseas Production Affiliates - North America. In: toyota-global.com. December 31, 2011, accessed July 13, 2019 .
