Subate (German: Subbath ) is a city in Latvia near the border with Lithuania . Subate is Sēlija , the eastern part of the region Semgallen (Latvian: Zemgale ), 40 km west of Daugavpils (German: Daugavpils ) and has 964 inhabitants.

history

In 1570 Gotthard Kettler , the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia , transferred a mansion on the Lake of Subate to the Baltic German Plater family , who ruled the whole of southeastern Latvia as nobles. This is how Alt-Subbath came about. After the Counter Reformation , the Plater- Syberg family converted to Catholicism . When she tried to persuade her serfs to convert and to withdraw their St. George Church from the Lutherans , they founded Neu-Subbath (Lat. Jaunsubate ) on the opposite side of the lake on the property of Hector Friedrich von Sacken . It was not until 1894 that the two places united. In the late 19th century , Jews made up half of the population; In 1914 the place had 2300 inhabitants. In 1917 Subate received city rights. The main trade in the city was Lithuanian flax ; this trade became meaningless after the First World War . Almost all Jews from Subate were killed by SS units under Walter Stahlecker during the German occupation in 1941 .

Attractions
