Sufi Abu Taleb

Sufi Abu Taleb ( Arabic صوفي أبو طالب, DMG Ṣūfī Abū Ṭālib ; * January 27, 1925 in Egypt ; † February 21, 2008 in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia ) was an Egyptian politician . After the assassination attempt on Anwar al-Sadat , he was the incumbent President of Egypt for eight days.

Career

Abu Taleb was President of Parliament from November 4, 1978 to November 4, 1983. In this capacity, after the assassination attempt on President Sadat on October 6, 1981, he took over his official duties until Husni Mubarak took over the office on October 14, 1981.

Prior to his political career, Abu Taleb studied law in Egypt, France and Italy and received a doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1952 . Abu Taleb later served as President of Cairo University and a co-founder of Faiyum University . Abu Taleb was a member of the Islamic Research Academy.

Taleb was a proponent of incorporating Sharia law into Egyptian law. Through his initiative, Article 2 of the Constitution received the provision that the Sharia would be the main source of Egyptian legislation.

Abu Taleb died of a heart attack and was buried with military honors.
