Sui Jianguo (Chin. 隋建國 also Sui JianGuo , * 1956 in Qingdao , China ) is a Chinese artist and professor of sculpture at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing .

Life

Sui is the child of a poor working class family. In his hometown of Qingdao, he first learned traditional Chinese art before engaging in Western art. In the 1980s he graduated from Shandong Art College and went to Beijing where he graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with a master's degree. He was then taken on as a research assistant in the sculpture department and rented his own studio in the Chinese capital. His first lectures as a visiting professor also took him abroad to Australia and France . He is now a full professor of sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Artistic work

In addition to sculpture, Sui also works with the means of video art, installation art and performance. Sui was best known in the West for his often strongly colored sculptures, which mostly have a strong reference to Chinese history and are supposed to reflect the ambivalence between socialism and capitalist modern China. So he cast the classic Mao suit in iron and bronze and let it rust or painted it in bright colors. The oversized red toy dinosaurs labeled “Made in China” were also discussed a lot.
