description

The very small owl grows to about eight inches long. The parting is strongly dashed black-brown and spotted. The dark brown upper side is marked with dark lines, whitish cross bars and light reddish brown spots. The shoulder feathers show white spots and an irregular dark mark. The underside is quite light with black and white banding and dark shaft lines. The eyes are yellow-orange and accentuated by whitish eyebrows. The bill is blackish horn-colored, the feather ears are small and rounded. On the dirty yellow feet only the upper half of the front is feathered, the claws are dark horn-colored.

It was previously considered a subspecies of the larger Manado scops owl , which, like the similar Moluccan scops owl, has longer feather ears. The species status has not been confirmed by molecular biological or bioacoustic studies.

It prefers lowland forests and secondary vegetation, even in swampy areas. Mainly insects and other invertebrates serve as food. Her voice is expressed in a rapid series of sonorous sounds in medium pitch lasting a little over a second. These series of calls can last more than two minutes.

distribution

The Sula scops owl is endemic to the islands of Taliabu and Mangole .
