Sulho Ranta

Sulho Veikko Juhani Ranta (born August 15, 1901 in Peräseinäjoki , † May 5, 1960 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish composer .

Ranta studied composition with Erkki Melartin at the Helsinki Music Institute until 1924 . In 1926 he continued his studies in Berlin, Vienna (with Arthur Willner , Franz Schreker and Joseph Marx ), and Italy, in 1930 in Berlin and Paris. Back in Finland, he also worked as a theater director, educator and music critic. From 1936 to 1956 he was Vice Rector of the Sibelius Academy . Joonas Kokkonen was one of his students . Among other things, his biographical encyclopedia about Finland's composers ( Suomen säveltäjiä ), which he published in 1945, became famous.

He composed four symphonies , concerts and other orchestral works, as well as choral, chamber and piano music. In his work there are influences from impressionism , from the folk music of Finland and from the musical cultures of China and Japan .
