Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud ( Arabic سلطان بن سلمان بن عبد العزيز آل سعود, DMG Sulṭan bin Salmān bin ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saʿūd ; * June 27, 1956 in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia ) is the son of Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz , who has been King of Saudi Arabia since 2015, and grandson of the founder of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ibn Saud and his favorite wife Hasa bint Sudairi . He is the first and so far only space traveler in his country, was the first Muslim in space and the youngest participant in a space shuttle mission.

Life

He was born in 1956 as the son of Salman ibn Abd al-Aziz, who later became King of Saudi Arabia. After attending elementary and secondary schools in Riyadh , he received his bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Denver , Colorado and his masters from Syracuse University on the East Coast of the United States, where he studied social and political science at the Maxwell School .

First he worked for the Ministry of Information in his country and in 1984 was responsible for the Saudi Arabian Information Committee for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . As part of an international crew that also included American and French astronauts , Al Saud was the first Arab to fly into space on June 17, 1985. He represented the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (ARABSAT) on the STS-51G mission with the US space shuttle Discovery . The mission ended after seven days. He then became a founding member of the Association of Space Explorers .

Al Saud later served as a scheduled airline pilot and director of the Saudi Arabian Commercial Television Office. Through his father, the owner of the newspaper Asharq al-Awsat (Arabic: الشرق الاوسط, translated: The Middle East), he is connected to one of the largest Arabic-language daily newspapers in the world. The newspaper serves as a mouthpiece for the Free Syrian Army during the civil war in Syria . Through his brother Faisal, who controls the Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG), he is connected to the largest media company in the Middle East.
