Mission overview
Three communications satellites were launched into orbit for the STS-51-G mission. These were Telstar -3D from AT&T, MORELOS-A for Mexico and ARABSAT-A for a Saudi Arabian organization. Among the experiments carried out, the first flight of the "Automated Directional Solidification Furnace" (ADSF), a kiln for physical examinations in weightlessness, should be mentioned in particular.
On June 20, a SPARTAN -101 satellite was launched and brought back on board after more than 45 hours. During the free flight of SPARTAN, a galaxy cluster and the center of our galaxy were explored.
The landing took place on schedule at Edwards AFB in California. Discovery was transported back to the Kennedy Space Center , Florida 4 days later in the then only Shuttle Carrier Aircraft .
