Summer '68 is a song by the British rock band Pink Floyd , released on the 1970 Atom Heart Mother album .

Summer '68 also appeared as the B-side of the Japanese single Julia Dream .

Conception

The song was written and sung entirely by Richard Wright . The piece was recorded in July 1970 at Abbey Road Studios . In the context of the work of the band Pink Floyd, Summer '68 is more of a peculiarity, because Wright worked out the vocal harmonies in unison vocal movements, reminiscent of The Beach Boys , in an atypical manner . In contrast to Wright's classic inspiration with Sysyphus on Ummagumma , here he lives out his lyrical streak. The piece begins with a calm piano part and thus contrasts with the fanfare, which rises explosively towards the middle and frames the song verses.

song lyrics

A fleeting and at the same time annoying love affair (possibly with a groupie ) in the summer of 1968 is discussed ( We say goodbye before we say hello ). The night of love ends in a serious disappointment ( I felt the cold too soon in a room of 95 / (meaning: 95 Fahrenheit )). The viewer would rather have fun with his (band) colleagues on the beach ( My friends are lying in the sun, I wish I was there ). The fear remains that the events will repeat themselves ( Tommorow brings another town, another girl like you ).
