Sundance is the name of a winter sports area in the Wasatch Mountains of the US state of Utah . The area is located on the eastern flank of Mount Timpanogos in Utah County and can be reached via Highway Utah-92 (also known as the Alpine Loop Road ) from US Highway 189 or the American Fork Canyon .

The ski area was founded in the 1950s as the Timp Haven Ski Area after the name of the mountain by a family of originally Scottish immigrants. In 1969, the actor Robert Redford bought the ski resort and the extensive property belonging to it and named it after his role name in the film Two Bandits (original title: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), which was released in the same year. He is the owner of the area to this day.

The ski area has three main ski lifts and a feeder lift with 44 slopes of all levels of difficulty, as well as a small drag lift on the practice slope. The area extends over around 650 meters in altitude between the valley station at 1860 m and the highest point at 2515 m on a ridge with the Bearcrest Lodge , a ski hut. In addition, around 15 km of trails are maintained for cross-country skiing and 10 km are marked and controlled for snowshoe enthusiasts.

The associated resort , also called Sundance, is located at around 1980 m about two kilometers north of the ski area and offers hotel and holiday home accommodation.

Sundance is also the name of the Sundance Institute founded by Redford , which in addition to training young filmmakers also organizes the annual Sundance Film Festival . The institute and festival have events in the ski area, but their respective main locations are Park City, about 50 km away east of the Wasatch Mountains .
