The American Fork Canyon is a canyon in the Wasatch range (" Wasatch Mountains "), 30 miles south of Salt Lake City , near American Fork in the state of Utah in the United States and famous for the stalactite cave system " Timpanogos Cave National Monument " on its south side . The "Alpine Loop Scenic Highway" section of Utah State Route 92 and the American Fork River , after which the canyon is named, run through the canyon .

From the west of Interstate 15 at Lehi , Utah State Route 92 leads between Highland and American Fork into the canyon to the Alpine Loop Pass and Mount Timpanogos . Here a maintained gravel road branches off to the east via Cascade Springs to Midway. The SR-92 continues south over the " Sundance Ski Resort " into Provo Canyon and to the Tibble Fork Reservoir and Cascade Springs .

recreation

The American Fork Canyon is designated as a Recreation Area within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and is administered by the US Forest Service . He maintains the hiking, biking and riding trails, operates simply equipped campsites and rents a few wooden houses. The Tibble Fork Reservoir and Silver Lake Reservoir are popular camping and fishing spots in summer and the starting point for snowmobiling, snow hiking, cross-country skiing and ski tours in winter.

The fees charged at the entrance per vehicle serve to preserve the recreation area, the wilderness and the protection of natural resources. They range from $ 6 for three days to $ 45 for the entire year.
