history

The sculpture Superlambanana is the work of the Japanese artist Taro Chiezo, who lives in Manhattan . He designed it for the ArtTransPennine Exhibition in 1998 , an initiative with the aim of creating a "corridor of art" through the north of England. Liverpool's contribution Superlambanana addresses a cross between lamb and banana , both in terms of the composition of words and the shape of the sculpture . This alludes ironically to the dangers of genetic engineering and the lamb and banana goods that were handled in the port of Liverpool. Chiezo made a four- inch model that four local artists, Tommy Reason, Andy Small, Ray Stokes, and Julian Taylor, enlarged to a 50: 1 scale using a lattice frame with a "skin" of concrete and fiberglass. The plastic weighs almost eight tons. It was made on the premises of the former Bryant & May Matchworks factory in Garston , south Liverpool, at a cost of £ 35,000.

The sculpture was unveiled at the Tate Liverpool reopening . At the end of the exhibition, it was given to the Liverpool Architecture & Design Trust. It is currently located on Tithebarn Street, outside Liverpool John Moores University . Its meaning and value were controversial at first, but it became a symbol of the city and appreciated by the public as an art.
