Superstolk (also: Superstolk 2000 , Die Popgruppe Superstolk ) is a German electro - punk band from Offenbach am Main, founded in 1995 . Superstolk has been operating as a duo since 2005 and consists of the Offenbach artists Torsten Kauke (guitar, vocals) and Jörg Ritter (electronic beats).

history

Under the name Superstolk 2000 , Torstn Kauke started (original spelling) Superstolk 1995 as a solo project and in the same year released his debut album Otherwise, as a tape on his own label Schweinhund Tapes . Coming from the punk rock scene, where he played in various bands guitar and bass, intend Kauke with the first purely electronically generated music, originally no more than the techno - hype to comment parody of the 1990s.

In the following years, Superstolk went through various formations "as a hip-hop trio, as an electro duo, as a four-piece rock band" (Kauke). At the turn of the millennium, the addition of 2000 to the name was given up in 1999 .

In 2005, Jörg Ritter joined the band, which has since worked as a permanent duo, but is occasionally supported live by guest musicians. Like Kauke, Ritter belonged to the artist group KiX and the two had already worked together on various projects for over a decade. With the entry of Ritter, the band increasingly began to play live throughout Germany and to publish records on a regular basis.

From the beginning, Superstolk followed the political and ethical principles of the do-it-yourself movement in their work , according to which they still work today. They compose, write, produce and design their own publications and mostly publish them on their own on Kauke's own label Unpop Media . They also mostly design the flyers and posters for their concerts themselves. Kauke documents and archives the band's work in detail on his blog Torstn Kauke presents Unpop .

Stylistically, the music of Superstolk is difficult to classify, influences from punk are processed as well as those from pop, techno and electronic music, jazz and experimental music of all stripes. Kauke and Ritter, both graduates of the Offenbach University of Design , give the project a distinctly artistic orientation. Some of their appearances are freely improvised and sometimes take on the character of experimental live performances . Not only musically, Superstolk keep leaving the genre-typical areas.

In 2012, on the occasion of dOCUMENTA (13), the Kunstverein > top eV invited Superstolk to play concerts as part of an event accompanying the Documenta. In addition to a concert in the Pot, the project rooms of > top eV, the band played an open-air concert in the Documenta Park of the Kassler Staatspark Karlsaue. Superstolk released a compilation of the recordings made during these performances as a digital EP under the title Kassel . At the 15th Discourse Festival in Giessen 2015, Superstolk accompanied the performance A Lizard Visited us for Breakfast III - Calypso-Banana-Haleluja-Onlineshopping by Marie Gavois and Michel Klöfkorn.

Superstolk accompanied silent film performances live with freely improvised soundtracks on various occasions, for example the 2013 film Sunrise - A song of two humans (1927) by FW Murnau at an open-air performance on the wagon on Kulturgleis in Offenbach, or the film Der Mann in 2014 with the camera (1229) of the director Dsiga Wertow , which the German Leather Museum Offenbach put on in its cinema.
