Surirella is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with around 200 species in fresh and marine water.

features

The representatives are unicellular, pennate (from Latin pinnatus pinnate) diatoms. The cells have a two-counter shell, which is typical for diatoms. The shell is rectangular or slightly trapezoidal when viewed from the side; when viewed from the shell, it is usually oval, with the ends often widened. The raphe runs around the shell in this genus. The bowl often has wings on the edge. The cell nucleus sits in the middle of the cell, the only plastid is H-shaped, wavy on the edge and golden brown due to fucoxanthin . The two lobes of the plastid lie under the shells. Some species have two plastids. The cells are 15 to 400 micrometers long.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical dichotomy of diatoms. Sexual reproduction occurs through isogamy , with one gamete being formed per cell . The cells then enlarge during the auxospore formation. Apogamy , the formation of zygote-like stages without gamete fusion, has also been observed in the genus .

Occurrence

Surirella lives mainly on substrate in standing and flowing water, in bog water, in brackish and sea water.
