geography
The 12 km long glacier, which flows in a northeastern, later east-northeast direction, is located at the foot of the Chugach Mountains 75 km east of Anchorage . The glacier ends at Surprise Inlet , a small side bay of the Harriman Fjord , which lies in the north of Prince William Sound . The Surprise Glacier is considered to be the most active tidal glacier on Prince William Sound and is often approached by excursion boats. 3.3 km above the lower end of the glacier, the Stairway Glacier, coming from the left, joins the Surprise Glacier.
