Surtal is a district of the municipality of Surberg in the Traunstein district in Upper Bavaria.

geography

The village is near the Traunstein – Freilassing road ( B304 ). It has 166 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 590  m above sea level. NN .

The eponymous Bach Sur rises approx. 2 km southeast of Surberg and finally flows into the Salzach near Surheim on the German-Austrian border .

history

On May 3, 1945, shortly before the end of the war, 61 prisoners from a death march from the Flossenbürg concentration camp were shot by their guards at the edge of the forest near Surberg (Wüstenreit) . A memorial near Surtal commemorates the massacre. The mostly Jewish victims rest in the cemetery at the memorial.

The place name Surtal itself came into being in the 1970s, when the districts of Maier, Sur, Gassen, Gottenbach, Stadeln, Weichetstein, Baumgarten and Buchmühle were combined. The name was chosen after the Bach Sur in the valley .

Others

The GTEV “Surtaler” Lauter traditional costume association founded in 1906 also named itself after this valley.

Sports

In addition to a tennis facility with three tennis courts, there is also a sports center with a multi-purpose hall and a soccer field in Surtal. Both sports facilities are assigned to SV Surberg.
