The Sur is a 43 km long river in the Upper Bavarian districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land , which rises near Surberg and, after a generally east-northeast run with some sharp changes of direction, flows from the left into the Salzach above the town of Laufen .

Surname

The Sur is namesake for the towns of Surberg , Surtal , Surmühl and Surheim am Lauf and also for the lower of its two large tributaries, the Kleine Sur .

geography

course

The Sur rises in the headwaters slope area of the Kühmoos near the Solitude Moos of the community Surberg in the district Traunstein at about 680  m above sea level. NN . On the first two and a half kilometers of its run, it moves in a rapid deepening and past Surberg itself to the northwest, until it enters a very wide floodplain, shared with the nearby Grundbach , at the Au des Dorfes industrial estate . The neighboring stream flows from the other side of the industrial zone west to the Traun , while the Sur goes east in an arc to the right and accompanied by the B 204 in the Mulde.

So she moves from the district of Surberg to that of Markt Teisendorf in the Berchtesgadener Land district . On the upward outskirts of Teisendorf itself, the first large right tributary Oberteisendorfer Ache runs in a kilometer-wide floodplain , which is a little shorter here, but has more catchment area and whose highest springs are much higher at over 1200  m above sea level. NN at Teisenberg arise. After being crossed in Teisendorf by the Rosenheim – Salzburg railway line , the Sur swings for about 6 kilometers in a very narrow valley to the north and finally runs through the municipality border with Petting again in the Traunstein district at about 464  m above sea level. NN the almost 7 hectare Sur reservoir .

Then it enters another wide ice age gully at the Schleifmühl von Petting, in which it flows past the Schönramer Filz to the southeast and from the eponymous Pettinger district of Schönram runs in sections on the municipal boundaries and also the district border. At the church village of Sillersdorf in the Saaldorf-Surheim community , it finally changes to the Berchtesgadener Land district, shortly afterwards it flows into the southernmost point of its course and below 424  m above sea level. NN from the municipality of Ainring to the Kleine Sur , its second large and also right tributary. This arises in the floodplain of the upper Sur, which continues south-east after its northern bend at Teisendorf.

From this confluence on, it turns north again, without having touched Freilassing , which is less than a kilometer to the east and whose boundary even extends to the left bank. A little later it runs on both sides in the municipality of Saaldorf-Surheim and crosses the Freilassing – Mühldorf railway line and, below Surheim, the B 20 on the left side of the Salzach . Then the Sur enters the forest in the left Salzach-Aue, where it ends from the right side of the Mittergraben, which meanders next to the canalised receiving water , before it immediately afterwards changes to the district of the city of Laufen , where it turns from the left and finally south flows into the Salzach .
