The Surspeicher (Surtalsperre) on the Sur in Bavaria is located on the northern border of the Teisendorf municipality ( Berchtesgadener Land ) near Schönram ( Petting municipality / Traunstein district ). It is used for flood protection and electricity generation and belongs to the Free State of Bavaria. It is operated by the Traunstein Water Management Authority and the hydropower plant by Landeskraftwerke Bayern GmbH.
The dam has an earth dam with a clay seal and filter zones inside, was built from 1965 to 1968 and was put into operation in 1968. In 1998 the facility was renovated.
The hydropower plant has an output of 250 kilowatts with a maximum head of 18 m and an additional flow rate of 1.9 m³ / s. Two coupled Francis turbines are used. The standard work capacity is 0.9 million kWh annually.
The reservoir is narrow and elongated and in normal cases (permanent traffic jams) it is rather small with 7 hectares. Only at high tide it is dammed up higher. If the water level of 464 m above sea level. NN at 478.25 m above sea level NN increases, additional 5.46 million cubic meters of water can be added, the water surface then grows to 67.2 ha.
