View of Sušak

Sušak has been part of the port city of Rijeka in Croatia in the east of the city since 1948 .

In 1924 Rijeka (Italian Fiume ) belonged to the Free State of Fiume , which was founded four years earlier in the Rapallo Border Treaty . In the Treaty of Rome, however , the Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes and Italy agreed to dissolve this free state. Instead, Italy annexed Fiume (Province of Fiume). Sušak remained with the Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes, but under the joint administration of the port.

From September 1943 to May 1945, Sušak and the island of Krk formed the "Commissariat Suschak-Krk" (Italian "Commissariato straordinario per i territori di Sušak-Krk"), a kind of buffer zone between RSI / OZAK and NDH .

In the Sušak district there is a hill and the Trsat fortress . Trsat is also considered to be the oldest pilgrimage site in Croatia. The name of the traditional football club from Sušak is now NK Orijent .
