Susana Díaz (2015)

Susana Díaz Pacheco (born October 18, 1974 in Seville ) is a Spanish politician. She was President of the Regional Government of Andalusia from September 2013 to January 2019 and has been Chair of the Andalusian Regional Association of the PSOE since November 2013 .

biography

Diaz received her degree in law at the University of Sevilla . At the age of 17 she began to get involved politically with the Juventudes Socialistas , the youth organization of the PSOE. In 1999 she was elected to the Seville City Council, where she worked in youth affairs and labor market policy, among other things.

In the parliamentary elections in 2004 she made it into the Spanish Chamber of Deputies and fulfilled her position as a member of parliament for the full legislative period. After the following ballot , she moved to the Senate , where she acted, among other things, as spokeswoman for her parliamentary group.

In 2012 she returned to Andalusia and became a member of the regional government there. She was initially responsible for gender equality issues and coordinating government work with coalition partner Izquierda Unida . After the decision of her predecessor José Antonio Griñan not to run for re-election, she was elected as a candidate for the presidency without any primaries due to the lack of internal party candidates and elected president of the regional government at the beginning of September. In November 2013 she also received 98.6% of the delegate's votes at an extraordinary party congress and has since then also been chairwoman of the Andalusian regional association of the PSOE.

At the beginning of 2015, it decided to bring forward the regional elections originally planned for 2016 and to hold them the following March. The reasons given were a lack of trust in the coalition partner IU and the resulting political instability. For this decision she was heavily criticized by both the coalition partner and the opposition PP . Her party was able to hold its mandate in the election , but again did not get enough seats to form a single government. After more than two months of negotiations, she was able to reach a pact with the Ciudadanos party, which had recently entered parliament ; In return for a few concessions such as the intensified fight against corruption, limitation of the terms of office of the regional presidents, a reform of the electoral law and a tax reform, the members of Ciudadanos made it possible by their abstention to re-elect Díaz as president of the regional government as head of a minority government .

In March 2017 she announced her candidacy for chairmanship of the PSOE; her candidacy was supported by former Prime Minister Felipe González . In the primary election held on May 21, 2017, she was defeated by almost 40 percent of the votes against Pedro Sánchez .

After the 2018 election , Díaz lost the office of Prime Minister of the region. Her successor was Juan Manuel Moreno from the conservative PP .

Díaz has been married since 2002 and had a son in July 2015.
