Susanne Valerie Herold (born November 10, 1975 in Offenburg ) is a German medic and infectiologist . Since 2018 she has been professor for infectious diseases of the lungs at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and head of the department for infectious diseases at the University Hospital in Gießen . Her research interests include influenza viruses , pneumonia and coronaviruses .

Career

Susanne Herold was born in Offenburg in 1975 and studied human medicine at the University of Giessen from 1995 to 2002 . She then worked there in the Department of Internal Medicine until 2013 . She took part in the international graduate program for molecular biology and lung medicine at the International Giessen Graduate Center for the Life Sciences (GGL) and received her doctorate in 2003 with a thesis on monocytes in the lungs. med. In addition, she obtained her Ph.D. in 2008 as part of a PhD program at the University of Giessen. In 2010 she received medical recognition in internal medicine and infectious diseases, followed by her habilitation on the mononuclear phagocyte system of the lungs in acute pneumonia .

Since 2013 she has been a visiting professor at Northwestern University in Chicago for the Department of Pulmonary and Intensive Care Medicine. In 2013 she became a senior physician and in 2015 - funded by the German Center for Lung Research - professor for acute lung failure at the Justus Liebig University and thus also at the University Hospital Gießen. In 2016, she passed another exam to become a specialist in pulmonology.

In 2018, Susanne Herold took over the professorship for infectious diseases of the lungs at the University of Giessen and at the same time became department head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Giessen University Hospital.

Herold is a member of numerous specialist societies, including the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt and the German Center for Infection Research since 2017 . She was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the Robert Koch Institute and is deputy chairwoman of the German Society for Infectious Diseases .

Susanne Herold has been leading a DFG- funded clinical research project on lung damage caused by viruses since 2016/2017 .
